Ford truck fuel pump problem?

okay i have a 1999 ford ranger XLT

well about 3 weeks ago i was on the highway and it started acting like it was out of gas, you know like cutting out sorta, like i push on the gas and it like putts along and then starts to go but still cutting in and out...but i had a full tank, well someone told me to put a fuel injector cleaner in it and i did and went through a full tank of gas, the whole time it was still doing it. So i change the fuel filter, didnt work. Do a test on the fuel pump, i heard that if you put your finger over the fuel line and turn the key on and if you can keep the gas from coming out than you have a bad fuel pump. well i did this and i kept it from coming out so i went and bought a fuel pump. %26quot; note this is week 2%26quot; i still have not put the new pump in but i have been driving my truck and its doing this in town now. usually when a fuel pump goes out it just goes out... this is the third week and im begining to think its not my fuel pump cause it is still running. (not to good but running).... what else could this problem be, the maintmence light is not turning on...

and i do not want any answers from those ford haters that will say something like %26quot; cause its a ford%26quot; or %26quot; go buy a chevy%26quot; cause im a ford man and nothing you can say can change my mind. thanks in advance! Ford truck fuel pump problem? The fuel pump can have problems on and off for a while then stop completely. Is it worse when it gets hot? My husband said mine was worse because it was giving out and when it was hot it was way worse, so when I started driving it was fine until about 5-10 minutes into the trip.

The old pumps just went but nowadays they are gear pumps not diaphragm so it is possible for them to take a while to give out completely.

I think you might want to start looking at the ignition module.. If the truck was running and started acting up when warm or heated conditions exist, then, I suggest trying the ignition module.... T
What is the rated psi on the fuel pump? I've heard of fuel pumps that run at 7 psi which I would imagine you could hold back. If this is happening while coasting on the highway, I would check out your egr valve. It could be a MAF related issue also but if your egr sticks when your not on the gas it keeps pumping lots of exhaust gas in and can almost stall the vehicle. I think mine was causing problems like that and also made the car stutter under cold start up conditions. It just finally threw a code on me after a tune up no doubt. I've just manually worked mine around (don't touch when hot as exhaust gas flows through) and was able to clear the code but I may be taking it off to clean or replace soon if it keeps acting up.

Good Luck!!!
the test that you describe is funny if nothing else. i would recommend that you use an actual Gauge to test it because of the amount of pressure involved with the fuel system. and even a bad pump you could not hold the pressure. a typical fuel pump for fuel injection runs at a pressure range around 45+ psi. you could hold about 5 psi for a little bit. i do think that the pump could be a part of the problem but, i think that you will find the heart of the problem in another system like the ignition system.
